MedPharm were looking to refurbish their existing buildings in phases to allow them to continue working and minimise downtime for their business. As their laboratory space had become tired and inefficient, they wanted to modernise their facilities in Guildford Science Park, creating an innovative, purpose-built space close to the university and hospital that will help to attract young talent. Their new workplace will enable them to work more efficiently and reflects their position as market leaders in the R&D pharmaceutical industry.
MedPharm needed their workplace to work better for their staff, who were highly engaged throughout the design process. Our client wanted to ensure their people were able to give their feedback on the space plan and design. This would help guarantee that their new facilities were fit for purpose and suited each and every employee and their specific needs, resulting in a space that is tailored for their business processes and their people.
The new facilities are split across two buildings consisting of three laboratory spaces for formulation development, production, and analysis, as well as an office space on one floor to cater to their admin and sales teams. The laboratories contain open plan lab space with specific rooms for testing and a separate write up area to prevent any contamination, leaving a clear divide between lab and administrative space.
When designing the lab space and selecting the furniture and finishes, we went through a stress testing process to ensure all materials in the finishes such as the desktops were fit for purpose. We worked with a lab specialist and went through a year of design development to reach a completed concept that suited the specifications of the client and their business needs.
A breakout space is provided on every floor meaning those working in the labs have informal space to use in close proximity to their workstations. A larger breakout area is also available for all employees on the first-floor office space, where the whole business can come together. This area also functions as a front-of-house space and contains flexible private offices that are open to all staff, as well as meeting rooms and single-person phone pods for task-based working.
The aesthetic of the office is clean, crisp, and neutral, with sporadic use of MedPharm’s brand to add vibrancy and character to the design to. MedPharm’s brand language was introduced at entrance points and in breakout areas on each floor, using the client’s primary palette and graphics to reinforce their brand for both visitors and employees. The contemporary workplace reflects their company identity and offers functional, modern workstations that will support talent attraction and improve the employee experience.
